Dilect and Accent




Dialect:

A dialect is a regional or social variety of a language. It has words and features of grammar that are not shared by other forms of the language, and is spoken with a different accent. Distinguishing a dialect from a language, or from a differently accented variety, is not a always easy, and is often based on political as much as on linguistic factors. Dialects of English include Scots, African American Vernacular English, and informal Singapore English ( 'Singlish'). Most dialect speakers also speak a standard variety of the language (such as British or American English). This fact is used to justify teaching Standard English to learners, rather than dialect.

Accent:

A person's accent is the way their pronunciation reveals their social and or geographical background. Someone form New Zealand, for example, typically speaks with a New Zealand accent, which nowadays means that shear and share are both pronounced shear. But within New Zealand there will be differences in accent according to factors such as social class and educational background. The same applies anywhere.

Reading and writing


Hello my dear students! I read you essays and I love reading your work. I wish I could read more. You know reading and writing are two great skills that help people improve their thinking. I spent a wonderful day today with my students talking about the fruit they like. Each student has his own fruit. I brought the idea of bringing the fruit to class and have a competition. Some students like the idea some feel wired. I was testing their reaction. I love almost all the fruit because their healthy. I am anxious about the activities on Saturday. Hello Salam,
Classroom Management ! I like this topic too. It is really a menace for a novice teacher to stand on a podium and ‘look’ at a class of 60 to 150 (that too college students).  We have example of many teachers crying in the class or just leaving it!
My experience says that if you start with personal note on day one , ‘know, address and respect’ every student you win the half battle. At least they don’t drive you out of the class. Next is you have to be ‘Prepared’ for one complete our. If they get slightest hint that you are just doing bla bla bla... they won’t allow you to stand. They really want to ‘learn with interest’ use technology which is their latest interest and bring multimedia... it fascinates them...

Hello Nishrin,
Classroom management is a very critical subject in the class. A very good teacher is a very good manager. Management means success in delivering the materials in a proper way. I know many teachers complain about the number of students. In my country Yemen a secondary school classroom now is 150 to 180 students in a class. A university class is 70 to 200 in a class. It is difficult for a teacher to manage but if we try we can manage. I believe that technology can help a lot in this situation. I agree with that preparation is a the start point in management. When a teacher is prepared well, that is management. In preparation there is a very detailed process that a teacher should follow. That is the secret hidden in classroom management.

Couple of things from my experience:  1) a teacher who is energetic and likes what s/he is teaching will pass that feeling along to her students. . . which leads to 2) I think that ELLs respond best to interesting content- content that is cognitively challenging and relevant to their lives.  This motivates them to communicate about the content - to explore, to share, to show what they know and what they want to know.  The successful ELT then can support students efforts by helping then learn the language they need to do the above.  For me content leads language in the EL classroom.  What do others think?  Best, M.
